This item was created from remnants of a Huipil, or blouse like garment woven and worn by the Mayan Indians of Guatemala. Using a traditional back-strap loom, along with hand embroidery, a Huipil can take 4-6 weeks working 8 hours a days, 6 days a week to complete. In the Huipil and other textile items, a Mayan woman weaves her history, ethnic identity, ancient myths, and design of the universe. The purchase of this and other handcrafted products not only aids the Mayans financially, but also allows them to maintain their creativity, while sharing an expression of their culture with the world.
